Exhibition: Francis Brett Young - Poet, Novelist, Soldier

Frequently writing about the history of the English midlands and the Welsh borderlands, Francis Brett Young (1884-1954) was particularly interested in the Elan Valley and Birmingham’s Welsh Water scheme -  a topic to which he regularly returned in his novels. The most famous of these, The House Under the Water, first published in 1932 has been dramatised for both BBC radio and television, produced as a talking book and translated into Finnish, German and Spanish.

Elan Links: Archive Project Volunteer

The Elan Links Archive Project aims to protect, record and celebrate Elan’s cultural heritage material which includes documents, memories, pictures and artefacts.  

A volunteer is required to assist the archivist in recording information onto the archive database. The majority of work will take place at CARAD in Rhayader and the Elan Valley Estate Office, however, some additional onsite work may be necessary.

Elan Links : Peat Bog Surveys

We are looking for volunteers to join us for 1 or 2 or 3 days in the unique Claerwen Valley.

We will be measuring the peat depth and undertaking botanical surveys. The information gathered will be used to put together a management plan to increase the biodiversity on the hill.

This activity will involve walking in difficult terrain, so you need a reasonable level of fitness.

The Botanical Society for Britain and Ireland are conducting surveys across the UK and Ireland. The information gathered will be used to compile the latest edition of an atlas of the British and Irish flora.

Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40 metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

Batik Workshop - inspired by John Piper

The artist John Piper created atmospheric images of the English landscape and its architecture. Using his work as inspiration artist Jenny O'Leary will teach you how to use the technique of batik – hot wax resist working on tissue paper and found papers with bleach and inks to create atmospheric textures and effects.

An exciting workshop allowing for exploration and discovery. No experience is necessary as the technique will be taught from scratch. A number of samples will be created during the workshop.

Dam Open Day

Join our Rangers at one of our big Dam Open Days - an exclusive chance to venture into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. You’ll enjoy a bird's-eye view of the dam wall – and learn about the feat of engineering that made Elan.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance. There is no need to book, simply turn up anytime between 1pm and 4pm.

There are steps inside the dam which may be wet and in some areas there are low light levels. Children should be carefully supervised at all times.

Powys Ramblers Walk

Sarah will lead an energetic 8 mile, figure-of-eight walk. In the morning, walk 4 miles along Caban Coch to Nant y Gro, climb to Tyn-y-pant before dropping down to the footpaths to the Visitor Centre. The second 4 miles crosses the Elan and climbs to Troed y rhiw felen and across moorland to Wenrhydd before dropping down behind the water treatment plant. Meet at the Visitor Centre.

Monks Trod Part 1: Strata Florida to Pont ar Elan

Monks Trod Part 2: The Abbey to the Elan

A joint event with Brecon Beacons Park Society. Join Dilys Harlow and Andrew Leonard as they lead the second part of the Monks Trod linear route from Abbey Cwmhir to Pont-ar-Elan. Dam Open Day

Join our Rangers at one of our big Dam Open Days - an exclusive chance to venture into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. You’ll enjoy a bird's-eye view of the dam wall – and learn about the feat of engineering that made Elan.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance. There is no need to book, simply turn up anytime between 1pm and 4pm.

There are steps inside the dam which may be wet and in some areas there are low light levels. Children should be carefully supervised at all times.

Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40 metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

This is a great way to find out what bushcraft is all about or to build on your current experience. These sessions will cover a variety of subjects such as knife skills, foraging, and natural cordage to name a few.

Reservoir Roundabout 2020

Annual Walking (or running) CHALLENGE EVENT held across OPEN AND CHALLENGING UPLAND TERRAIN in and around the Elan and Claerwen Valleys.
The route is waymarked in parts but MAP READING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED.
Either 13 or 20 mile courses are available.  Entry Fee & Kit Check apply.

Start Times  :  8.30am for 20 mile route Walkers;  and 9.00am for 13 mile route and ALL RUNNERS on both routes.
