Atlas 2020 Survey – Claerwen Valley

The BSBI (Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland) is currently surveying as much of the country as possible to update their botanical species atlas.

As part of this project an area of the Claerwen Valley was chosen by Barbara Brown, (from the BSBI), who did a great job of leading the way, and coaching the group in plant ID.

There are no previous botanical records for this particular area, so the group were not sure what to expect beforehand. However, they were delighted to discover a wide range of upland bog specific species, some quite common and some less so. There was a good range of grasses and sedges, but also some flowering plants, sundew, lousewort, cranberry, heath milkwort to name a few.

In total the 5 volunteers found 45 different species, quite an achievement.

Following on from this, it has been decided to survey another part of the valley (a bit more accessible this time) and combine it with a more general survey of the species present. So all butterflies, beetles, spiders and dragonflies etc. will also be recorded.

This Bog Discovery Day will be on Friday 16th August 10-3pm.

Arolwg Atlas 2020 – Dyffryn Claerwen

Ar hyn o bryd mae’r BSBI (Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland/Cymdeithas Botanegol Prydain ac Iwerddon) yn gwneud ymchwil arolwg ar gymaint o’r wlad a phosibl er mwyn diweddaru eu hatlas rhywogaethau botanegol.

Fel rhan o’r prosiect yma dewiswyd ardal o Ddyffryn Claerwen gan Barbara Brown (o’r BSBI), ac fe wnaeth waith arbennig o dda yn arwain y ffordd, ac yn hyfforddi grŵp i adnabod planhigion.

Nid oes cofnodion botanegol blaenorol ar gael ar gyfer yr ardal hon, felly nid oedd gan y grŵp fawr o syniad beth i’w ddisgwyl ymlaen llawn.  Fodd bynnag, roeddynt yn hapus i ddarganfod amrywiaeth eang o rywogaethau yn benodol i gorsydd yr ucheldir, rhai yn eithaf cyffredin a’r gweddill ddim mor gyffredin.  Roedd amrywiaeth eang o wair a hesg, ond hefyd planhigion blodeuol, gwlithlys, melog y cŵn, llugaeron, a llysiau’r groes i enwi ond ychydig.

Darganfyddodd y 5 gwirfoddolwr cyfanswm o 45 o rywogaethau gwahanol, sy’n gamp dda.

Yn dilyn hyn, penderfynwyd i wneud arolwg mewn rhan arall o’r cwm (a fydd yn fwy hygyrch y tro yma) a chyfuno ag arolwg mwy cyffredinol o’r rhywogaethau sy’n bodoli.  Felly fe gofnodir yr holl glöynnod byw, chwilod, pryf copyn a gweision y neidr ayyb.

Fe fydd y Diwrnod Darganfod Chwilod ar ddydd Gwener 16 Awst 10yb-3yp.
