Dam Open Days

Join our Rangers at one of our Dam Open Days during the Easter Holidays - an exclusive chance to venture into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. You’ll enjoy a bird's-eye view of the dam wall – and learn about the feat of engineering that made Elan.

Welsh Water Work at Craig Goch Dam

What can you expect?
The time has now come to progress to our main phase of the project which includes work to the pipes and valves which form part of the dam. This phase of our work will begin on Monday 13th June, and we aim to finish in January 2023, dependant on the weather conditions.
Nearby residents may notice additional traffic from our teams in the area, but please be assured that we will use mitigation measures where possible to keep disruption to a minimum. If anything changes, we’ll make sure to let you know.
Summer Dam Open Days

High Ropes Challenge
Wed 10 Aug / 10:00 - 12:30
Location: Sawmill
Platforms, bridges, unusual obstacles, a zip line and an adrenaline jump – all in a stunning setting alongside Caban Coch Reservoir.
You don’t need experience or to be super fit, however you must be over 1.4m tall, have a waist of less than 43” and be able to climb a rope ladder.
You will also need transport, stout shoes and appropriate clothing.
Archery Taster Session

Location: Meet at Elan Village Green
Hour long sessions to try your hand at archery, £15 per person, minimum age 8, please wear long sleeves.

Powys Ramblers: Elan Valley East Hike

Location: Penbont Car Park 9156
A challenging 11 mile walk starting with an ascent above Pen y Garreg reservoir. We will then follow some high-level moorland which affords good views of Craig Coch reservoir before descending gradually to the mountain road before climbing again to the standing stone Maen Serth, which again offers fine views. Following this we have a long, gradual descent through the old golf links to the outskirts of Rhayader before a short climb to get wonderful views of Rhydoldog House. After this one more climb up to Moelfryn Mawr and then the final descent back to the cars.
Beginners Navigation / Gweithdy Mordwyo i Ddechreuwyr

Join Terry Smith for a hands-on day of map and compass reading. With both theory and practical application this workshop will improve your understanding of maps and access to the countryside. This course is suitable for people over 13 years of age. Meet at the Visitor Centre. Please book your place here.
Look Across Wales / Edrych ar Draws Cymru

A moderate 7 mile walk with one off track grassland section and steep downslope. Starting at Dol y Mynach car park, we walk up the Rhiwnant Valley and make our way to the track heading towards the highest point on the Elan Estate, Drygarn Fawr, at 641m above sea level. Weather permitting, we will be able to see the Irish Sea, and turning our heads we will be able to view the Black Mountains on the England/Wales border, therefore looking along a 55 mile diagonal line from one side of Wales to the other.
