Mandi, ‘The Feather Lady’, based in North Somerset is best known for her exquisite paintings of birds of prey on real feathers. This unconventional medium has become her signature style and several of her feather paintings have won awards in various Wildlife Art Exhibitions including being selected as a finalist in The David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of The Year Exhibition on two occasions.
 
David Wettner is a stained glass artist, and also painter in oils, living in Mid Wales.

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40 metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

Roman Camp Ramble

Blow away the winter blues with a hike to a Roman Camp. This largely moorland walk takes us past Penygarreg Dam, climbs 200 metres to Crugyn before dropping down to the mountain road. The return route passes the Roman Camp and Esgair Parfedd then drops down to the Penygarreg Reservoir. A 10 mile walk with climbs and rough ground plus fords make this a challenging walk requiring a reasonable degree of fitness. Meet Powys Ramblers member Dave at Penbont car park.

The Gilfach area of Mid Wales is known for its stunning, dark skies with an International Dark Sky Park nearby. Listen to night noises and gaze at the stars if it is clear. We will be looking at moths and detecting bats with our specialised detectors. A short walk on easy terrain will be around 1 mile long. A Visit to the Mines

Visit some mid nineteenth century lead mines. Join us for a visit to the Cwm Elan Mines above Garreg Ddu Reservoir. This 8 mile walk, led by Shirley and Emlyn takes us through woodland alongside the reservoir before climbing up to the mines. After visiting the mines we continue uphill to Moelfryn, drop down to Tynllidiart and to Pen y Garreg Dam before returning via the Elan Valley Trail. Climbs and rough walking call for a reasonable level of fitness for this East Radnor group walk led by Powys Ramblers members. No dogs please. Meet at Nantgwyllt Church car park.

Angela is a local artist from Pontrhydfendigaid who works in a variety of media. For some time now her work has been strongly influenced by imagery of the Cosmos and she is excited to be exhibiting in the Elan Valley, that now has Dark Sky Status.

Artist Jenny O'Leary will help you how to use the beautiful shapes of seedpods and various plant forms as inspiration to create batiks on tissue paper.

A Family Ramble in the Valley

A scenic, family friendly walk. Nantgwyllt Church is the start point for this gentle walk alongside Dol y Mynach and Caban Coch reservoirs, via the partially built dam, before a short climb to a small ford before returning on open grazed ground above forestry with good views of the reservoir. Generally good paths with a rougher, short stretch. This is an easy walk of 4.5 miles and is led by Alan from Powys Ramblers. All welcome. Meet at Nantgwyllt Church car park.

The Large Heath butterfly can be found near cotton grass in damp places.

We are looking for volunteers to come and hopefully help count them.

The session will require walking in difficult terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

You are invited to join us on our annual shearing day afternoon at this traditional hill farm.  Learn about ear tags, earmarks, pitch marks, hefted flocks, tups, wethers and witness traditional hand shearing and wool spinning.

Starting from Penbont car park, this 8 mile walk takes us to Tynllidiart before climbing to Moelfryn, skirting round Esgair Brithgwm and dropping down into the valley. After fording the watercourse we pick up an old low stone wall down to Craig Goch Dam. Return is likely to be by road due to problems with the Devil’s Gulch. One steep climb, rough walking and wet ground makes this a challenging walk for families and older children. Meet at Penbont car park.

Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40 metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

Meet at the Visitor Centre.

Two Dams Walk

Visit two partial dams. Meet Powys Ramblers member Chris for an 8 mile, mixed terrain walk starting through Cnwch Wood before taking to tarmac up to Ty'n y Pant. We then skirt the forestry towards Llannerch y Cawr before returning via Dol y Mynach, Graig Fawr, Nant y Gro and Caban Coch Reservoir. Another challenging walk for families and older children. Gynon Gander

Chris Franks will lead this 9 mile walk in the upper Claerwen, which mostly has good walking conditions with a few rough patches. Proceed along the scenic Arban Valley to the edge of the Moel Prysgau plantation. We will then walk to the summit of Crug Gynon, visiting the cairn that has dramatic views of the mighty Llyn Gynon to the north and the source of the Towey River to the south. Walking northeast, we overlook the bog of Bryn Trapau then proceed back along Esgair Garthen with stunning elevated views of the Claerwen Reservoir and the most remote working farm in Wales.

Dam Open Day

Join our Rangers at one of our big Dam Open Days - an exclusive chance to venture into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. You’ll enjoy a bird's-eye view of the dam wall – and learn about the feat of engineering that made Elan.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance. There is no need to book, simply turn up anytime between 1pm and 4pm.

Elan Eye: Night Photography Workshop

Looking to improve your night photography? Join Daniel Meredith for a relaxed, friendly workshop in the Elan Valley. The evening will include a talk with refreshments and live site tuition, including travel to sites.

This workshop is aimed at high level beginners – intermediates with a DSLR and tripod. Please note that we are not responsible for any equipment.

Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

Meet at the Visitor Centre.

Reservoir Roundabout 2021

Annual Walking (or running) CHALLENGE EVENT held across OPEN AND CHALLENGING UPLAND TERRAIN in and around the Elan and Claerwen Valleys.
The route is waymarked in parts but MAP READING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED.
Either 13 or 20 mile courses are available.  Entry Fee & Kit Check apply.

Start Times  :  8.30am for 20 mile route Walkers;  and 9.00am for 13 mile route and ALL RUNNERS on both routes.
