Exhibition: Cosmos Art by Angela Kelly

Angela is a local artist from Pontrhydfendigaid who works in a variety of media. For some time now her work has been strongly influenced by imagery of the Cosmos and she is excited to be exhibiting in the Elan Valley, that now has Dark Sky Status.

Much of her recent work has drawn inspiration from these nocturnal landscapes.

Artwork will be available for sale.

Open daily between 10am and 5pm at the Visitor Centre.

Drygarn and Gorllwyn

Come for a 10.5 mile energetic walk over wild and rough country with Andrew Leonard and Dilys Harlow, visiting two high points of the Elan Valley Estate. We will ascend the Rhiwnant to Drygarn Fawr, walk eastwards to Pen y Gorllwyn and return down the Marchnant. Please bring suitable walking equipment, boots, drinks and a packed lunch. Batik Workshop - Seedpods and Natural Forms

Artist Jenny O'Leary will help you how to use the beautiful shapes of seedpods and various plant forms as inspiration to create batiks on tissue paper.

Working with wax as a resist we will use bleach and inks to create a selection of imaginative interpretations of the theme. Work will be suitable for framing, and can also be added to with stitch at a later date.

Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to learn about the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid.

There is a steep climb of 40 metres up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140 metre climb.

Meet at the Visitor Centre.

Elan Links : Hay Meadow Survey Training 1

Come and join us for 2 days of botanical surveys in the traditional hay meadows of the Elan Valley. These are designated SSSI and host a wide variety of plant species.

The surveys form part of the work being done by the Elan Links project to record and preserve the natural heritage of the Elan Valley.

A Family Ramble in the Valley

A scenic, family friendly walk. Nantgwyllt Church is the start point for this gentle walk alongside Dol y Mynach and Caban Coch reservoirs, via the partially built dam, before a short climb to a small ford before returning on open grazed ground above forestry with good views of the reservoir. Generally good paths with a rougher, short stretch. This is an easy walk of 4.5 miles and is led by Alan from Powys Ramblers. All welcome. Meet at Nantgwyllt Church car park.

Local artist Angela May Lewis will provide you with full tuition to create an oil painting on canvas from start to finish, using various tools and techniques. Suitable for all abilities.

The Power of Pollinators

Get out in the summer sun and enjoy learning about bees and meadow insects during National Insect Week. Local wildlife guides Sorcha Lewis and Janice Vincett look forward to showing you the amazing insects there are in the Elan Valley. Visit a beautiful hay meadow on a working hill farm to find out some of the unique wildlife being safeguarded in this upland landscape. Bring your camera as there's plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Elan Links: Large Heath Butterfly Survey

Come and join us looking for one of our rarer butterflies in the uplands of the Elan Valley.

The Large Heath butterfly can be found near cotton grass in damp places.

We are looking for volunteers to come and hopefully help count them.

The session will require walking in difficult terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.
