The Gilfach area of Mid Wales is known for its stunning, dark skies with an International Dark Sky Park nearby. Listen to night noises and gaze at the stars if it is clear. We will be looking at moths and detecting bats with our specialised detectors. A short walk on easy terrain will be around 1 mile long. Join our Rangers at one of our big Dam Open Days - an exclusive chance to venture into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. You’ll enjoy a bird's-eye view of the dam wall – and learn about the feat of engineering that made Elan.
Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance. There is no need to book, simply turn up anytime between 1pm and 4pm.

Visit some mid nineteenth century lead mines. Join us for a visit to the Cwm Elan Mines above Garreg Ddu Reservoir. This 8 mile walk, led by Shirley and Emlyn takes us through woodland alongside the reservoir before climbing up to the mines. After visiting the mines we continue uphill to Moelfryn, drop down to Tynllidiart and to Pen y Garreg Dam before returning via the Elan Valley Trail. Climbs and rough walking call for a reasonable level of fitness for this East Radnor group walk led by Powys Ramblers members. No dogs please. Meet at Nantgwyllt Church car park.
