Fishing

A fishing information leaflet and permits are available from the Elan Valley Visitor Centre.

All anglers 12 years and over need an Environment Agency rod licence available from Post Offices. Permits will not be issued without a valid rod licence.

There are two types of permit available, for fly fishing only:

  • Elan Trout Fisheries Permit

This covers 35 km of shoreline of the Elan Valley Reservoirs (Caban Coch, Garreg Ddu, Pen y Garreg abd Craig Goch), except for small fish and wildlife conservation areas from Penbont Bridge to Pen y Garreg Dam and a small area at the top of Craig Goch Reservoir.

Price: £8.50 per day, £4 junior permit (under 16 years), season tickets are also available. 

  • Claerwen Wild Brown Trout Fishery Permit

This covers:  

20 km of shoreline of the Claerwen Reservoir, except for a small fish and wildlife conservation area at its top end.

All feeder streams of the Claerwen Reservoir

The upland lakes, except Llyn Gwngu, Llyn Fyrddon Fach, Llyn Fyrddon Fawr and Llyn Du. 

The River Elan above Pont ar Elan bridge and below Caban Coch Dam.

The River Claerwen above Llannerch y Cawr bridge. 

Price: £6 per day, £4 concessionary.
