River Studies

Physical features of the River Elan

The River Elan has many features which can be studied including meanders, erosion and deposition, confluences and U- and V- shaped valleys.

This activity takes half a day, although a popular option is to look at man's impact on the river in the morning (Water Water Everywhere tour), followed by the river study activities in the afternoon, making a full day.

Activities can include field sketches, flow rates, river depth and width measurements, as well as studying man's use of the river. Pupils do not enter the water at any time.
