Events in the Elan Valley for June 2010

2 Wed Bug Bonanza

An afternoon of pond dipping and bug hunts suitable for all the family. Come along and discover more about the exciting world of bugs.


Meet at Dol y Mynach lay-by at 2pm, till 4pm.

3 Thur Dam Open Day

A chance for you to go into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. Our team of Rangers will be on hand to direct people and answer any questions.

There are steps inside the dam which may be wet and in some areas there are low light levels. Children should be carefully supervised at all times.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance.

Dam open from 1pm to 4pm. Entrance £1 - children free. All proceeds to the charity WaterAid.

There will also be Dam Open Days on July 28, August 24 and October 27 this year.

 

6 Sun Birdwatching Safari

Join Pete Jennings (County Bird Recorder) or Simon Breeze (Elan Countryside Ranger) on a Landrover trip looking for the typical breeding birds of the area. Suitable for beginners and experienced alike.  Meet at the Visitor Centre at 9.30am, back about 1pm.  Please bring binoculars if you have them and suitable clothing/footwear as there will be short walks.

6 Sun Gorllwyn and Gamrhiw

Richard Tyler, former Elan Valley Trustee, will lead a moderate hillwalk to the peaks of Gorllwyn (613m) and Gamrhiw (599m) on the southern boundary of the Elan Estate, approximately 10 miles. Meet at Llannerch y Cawr car park at 10am, back by 4pm.

Please bring waterproofs, stout footwear and a packed lunch. All dogs on leads please.

6 Sun Village Tour

A very easy one mile walk to look at the history of Caban Coch Dam, Workers’ Village and surrounding features. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back about 3.30pm.

19 Sat Henfron Farm

Join Angela and Tony Davies at Henfron Farm, home of the award winning Elan Valley Mutton, for an afternoon guided walk of a working hill farm. Henfron is situated high on the hillside overlooking Garreg Ddu Bridge with spectacular views all round. Access is via a stoned road from the Nantgwyllt Church end of Garreg Ddu Bridge (Grid reference: SN910638).

Join Angela & Tony at 2pm with an expected 5pm finish. Please bring stout footwear and waterproofs but NO dogs.

20 Sun Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to look at the history and natural history of the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid. There is a steep climb of 40m up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140m climb. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back about 5pm.

 


26 Sat Butterflies, Bugs and Beasties

An afternoon of pond dipping, bug hunting and butterfly spotting. In celebration of National Insect Week, join Countryside Rangers and discover the fascinating world of British insects.

27 Sun The Rocks of Claerwen

This walk along the north side of Claerwen Reservoir will examine the different rocks forming the central part of the Cambrian Mountains - the area known to Ciraldus Cambrensis as Elenydd. These all belong to the Llandovery division of the Silurian Period, but were highly folded during the mid-Devonian Caledonian period of mountain-building.

The leader, Dr John Davies, now retired, was the former Regional Geologist for the Countryside Council for Wales in Powys and SE Wales.

Meet at the Visitor Centre at 1pm (we will then drive in convoy to Claerwen Dam), back about 5pm.
