1 Wed - 5 Sun Elan - Land of Water Exhibition

Lorentz Gullachsen is an advertising and fine art photographer. This is a photographic exhibition on the Elan Valley and its connection to Birmingham.

"My project aims to illustrate this wonderful area which has delivered our most essential basic need- water. Although initially a dramatic change to the landscape, the dams and the infrastructure have created a wonderful environment that can be enjoyed today and we should celebrate this". 

Open from 10am to 5.30pm at the Visitor Centre.

1 Wed - 31 Fri Kids' Summer Scavenge

Running throughout the summer holidays anytime between 11am and 5pm. Call into the Visitor Centre to pick up your collecting bag with instructions about what to do. This is a family event - no unaccompanied children please.

 

2 Thur Bug Hunt

Become a bug hunter for the afternoon and discover more about the fascinating world of minibeasts! Suitable for all the family.

Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back about 4pm. It is essential to book a place on this event - please ring 01597 810898.

This event will also be held on Wednesday 15 August.

4 Sat Village Tour

A very easy one mile walk to look at the history of Caban Coch Dam, Workers' Village and surrounding features. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back about 3.30pm

This event will also be held on Saturday 2 September and Sunday 24 February 2013.

8 Wed Bug Bonanza

A fun afternoon of pond dipping and bug hunts suitable for all the family. Come along and discover more about the exciting world of bugs.

Meet at Dol y Mynach lay-by at 2pm, till 4pm.

12 Sun Pet Show - click here to download an entry form

A chance to show off your pets at our annual Pet Show. Due to record entries in the past, please contact us for an entry form beforehand to let us know what pets you will be bringing. We cannot guarantee a cage for your pet if you turn up on the day as in previous years.

Entry fee is 50p per pet. Sorry, no dogs. Judging starts at 2.30pm at the Visitor Centre. For further information and an entry form telephone 01597 810390.

18 Sat - 2 September Sun - In Our View Exhibition

An exciting new exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints from the Rhayader Art Group, depicting local landscapes, wonderful wildlife, mountain and moorland, valleys and vistas. Members will be demonstrating their skills during the exhibition, and all works will be for sale. Open from 10am until 5.30pm at the Visitor Centre.

Open Afternoon at Llannerch y Cawr Longhouse

This is your opportunity to step back in time and enjoy a visit to this traditional Welsh Longhouse, part of which dates back to the 15th Century. The property is a Grade II Listed Building and has been carefully restored by the Elan Valley Trust and now offers two units of self catering holiday accommodation where people and their livestock used to co-exist! Meet at the property which is located in the Claerwen Valley at NGR SN902615, between 1pm and 4pm. No dogs please.

19 Sun Dambusters Walk

A 4 mile guided walk to look at the fascinating history and biodiversity of the area, including the remains of Nant y Gro Dam which was used for tests before the WW2 Dambusters Raid. There is a steep climb of 40m up the steps to the top of the dam and then a very steep 140m climb.

Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back around 5pm.

This event will also be held on Sunday 16 December this year.

19 Sun The Ponies of the Claerwen

A unique opportunity to see the large herd of wild Welsh Mountain Ponies (Sections A+C) specially gathered for the day, whilst visiting "possibly the most remote farmhouse in Wales". Meet and talk with Glyndwr and Wendy Jones about life and farming in this remote and harsh but very special environment where no mains services exist. Enjoy a traditional Welsh Tea and savour the peace and tranquillity - join Glyndwr and Wendy between 2pm and 5pm. No dogs please.

 

Claerwen Farm (NGR  SN 821673) can be approached from the west via a private road from the Teifi Pools (NGR SN794680) or from the east via Claerwen Dam (NGR SN871636) but please note the stoned road is rough and should only be attempted by experienced and competent drivers of 4x4's.

21 Tue Animal Papier Maché Masks!

Come and have a go at making papier maché masks. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, until 4pm.

24 Fri Dam Open Day

A chance for you to go into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. Our team of Rangers will be on hand to answer any questions. There are steps inside the dam which may be wet and in some areas there are low light levels. Children should be carefully supervised at all times.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance. Turn up anytime between 1pm and 4pm. Entrance £1 adults - children 50p. All proceeds to the charity WaterAid.

The final Dam Open Day of 2012 will be held on Thursday 1 November.

31 Fri Creatures of the Night

Join Sorcha Lewis from the Radnorshire Mammal Group for an amazing insight into the variety of our bat and moth species. Bats rank among our planet's most misunderstood and intensely persecuted mammals because they are active only at night and difficult to observe and understand. This event will enlighten you on the "beauty of bats" and the "merits of moths". Join Sorcha at 7.30pm - late finish. Meet at Llannerch y Cawr car park. Please bring warm clothes, insect repellent and a torch. No dogs please.
