Events in the Elan Valley for April 2010

1 Thur – 11 Sun Dippers and Damsels
– Wildlife images of the Elan Valley and Mid Wales

Wildlife Artist and Photographer Simon Breeze (Countryside Ranger) has lived in Mid Wales for five years and has found endless inspiration from the wild delights to be found in this beautiful part of the world.

The exhibition features an array of wildlife through the seasons, reminding us how nature’s struggle for survival is often displayed with beautiful and breathtaking results.

Open from 10am to 5.30pm at the Visitor Centre. Part of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.

2 Fri - 5 Mon Easter Egg-stravaganza

Come and ‘eggsplore’ with our family fun quiz, starting from the Visitor Centre anytime between 11am and 4.30pm. Entry 50p per child, winner gets a BIG Easter Egg! All children to be accompanied by an adult.

6 Tues Dam Open Day

A chance for you to go into Pen y Garreg Dam and up to the central tower. Our team of Rangers will be on hand to direct people and answer any questions.

There are steps inside the dam which may be wet and in some areas there are low light levels. Children should be carefully supervised at all times.

Park at Penbont car park and take a walk through the woodland, up the steps to the dam entrance.

Dam open from 1pm to 4pm. Entrance £1 - children free. All proceeds to the charity WaterAid.

There will also be Dam Open Days on June 3, July 28, August 24 and October 27 this year.
 
 

8 Thur Children’s Critter Crafts

Come along on this children’s event and make something to take home. Turn up anytime between 2pm and 4pm at the Visitor Centre. No unaccompanied children please.

 

11 Sun Village Tour

A very easy one mile walk to look at the history of Caban Coch Dam, Workers’ Village and surrounding features. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 2pm, back about 3.30pm.

 

17 Sat History Walk – prehistoric burial and ritual sites

Archaeologist Nigel Jones leads a moderate 5 mile walk to visit an important group of prehistoric burial cairns on Gro Hill and a stone circle at Crugian Bach. The walk includes sections of moorland and a small stream crossing. Bring appropriate clothing, footwear and lunch. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 12pm; back by 5pm. A joint event with the Cambrian Mountains Society.

18 Sun Birdwatching Safari 

Join Pete Jennings (County Bird Recorder) or Simon Breeze (Elan Countryside Ranger) on a Landrover trip looking for the typical breeding birds of the area. Suitable for beginners and experienced alike. 


Meet at the Visitor Centre at 9.30am, back about 1pm. 

Please bring binoculars if you have them and suitable clothing/footwear as there will be short walks.

25 Sun Birdwatching Safari

25 Sun Valleys and Views

Join local shepherd Tudor Davies for an energetic hillwalk taking in the Elan, Wye and Dernol Valleys together with a section of the Wye Valley Walk. Approximately 12 miles long.  Meet at Aberhenllan at 10am, back by 5pm. Please bring waterproofs, stout footwear and a packed lunch. NO dogs please.
